Is it possible to have what the Word of God says- to have a place of peace in your heart that can quiet your mind? The truth is that even when it doesn’t make sense to our mind we can maintain peace in the midst of trouble. We can leave people wondering why we are not losing it and freaking out in the midst of tragedy. Our faith can be a witness of the living God.
When tragedy struck in my life, I put my faith to the test, and came out above it all. My story compelled me to write my book “Come Back Home” to share how my life had fallen apart, but was still able to tap into God’s peace that surpassed all understanding. I grabbed hold of God’s word and peace was the anchor to my soul.
We are supposed to stand out amongst people with a noticeable strength and trust in God. We can rejoice in the Lord always and let our sweet reasonableness be known (Philippians 4:4-5).
There are people who believe that they cannot avoid a troubled heart when faced with problems. When trouble strikes they panic, become bitter, angry, upset, desperate, and are simply not fit to be around. They are focusing on the wrong things. They let trouble into their hearts by focusing on things that are not what God says we should be thinking about – going through anguish for no reason. Anguish doesn’t help any situation; it will only make it worse.
To sum it up, the Bible goes on to say in Philippians 4:4-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds. Finally, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if there is anything excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. Whatever you have learned from me- put into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” God’s words are not merely suggestions. They are commands. They are the way we are supposed to live – worry-free and care-free.
Our part is to do something with our mind and thinking, so that we can change our perspectives, and God promises to keep us in a cocoon of perfect peace. I have maintained my peace during the worst of times, so I know that it is possible to live a life of faith that will not let anything trouble my heart. We do not have to be victims of whatever happens around us. With trust in God, we do not allow whatever is happening to trouble us.
We can live a different life because we live by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). We can have a value system that marks our priorities of living according to the Word of God. Although we will be tempted to be frustrated, anxious, worried, upset, and stressed, even mad or scared, when faced with uncertainty and trouble, we can chose not to let this into our hearts. We can resist the temptation and not let anything shake or trouble our hearts. It is important to learn the truth and have it as a way of life.
Pray and allow God to reveal how to apply the skill of not allowing your heart to be troubled in the areas of your life where you are suffering. Let God show you what is important, and what is not, to prioritize things in your heart and mind. It will help you to change your focus and set things right in your life. The moment you change the way you see things, light will come in and shine on a completely different set of values. This is when we can put our energy into what God wants us to and keep our peace.
Do not let your heart be troubled (John 14:1). Have peace that surpasses all understanding and let others know it is a choice, a decision to not be upset. We cannot find this kind of peace, God’s peace, that comforts us, anywhere else!
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles. So that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
